Solombi Benjamin
Solombi Benjamin (b. 1988) is a prominent Ugandan artist renowned for his semi-realistic oil paintings that seamlessly blend abstract concepts with intricate textures. Born in Mukono, Uganda to Dr. Peter Kiyondo and raised in a predominantly female household, Solombi draws profound inspiration from the unique mannerisms and strengths of the women around him. His work elegantly captures themes of grace, resilience, survival, and community, particularly through the lens of matriarchal authority.
He is graduate of Makerere University with a Bachelor's in Industrial and Fine Art (BIFA) from the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) and Margaret Trowel School of Industrial and Fine Art (MTSIFA).
Solombi employs a palette knife to create bold and dynamic figurative textures that transform his female figures into powerful symbols of resilience and elegance. His technique invites viewers to delve into the complexities of identity and societal dynamics, often incorporating elements of folklore, lifestyle, and spirituality. Solombi’s paintings are designed to foster emotional connections with audiences, prompting introspection and deeper conversations about individual and collective experiences.
His unique collection has been prominently featured at the Nommo Gallery, Uganda’s national gallery in Kampala, showcasing the rich narratives embedded in his artistic practice. Through his work, he invites viewers to engage with the intricate tapestry of life and the profound stories of women within their communities.
Over the years, Solombi has participated in numerous group exhibitions and is now eagerly anticipating his first solo exhibition, “Echoes of Disorder”. The exhibition will debut at Nommo Gallery on March 21, 2025, as part of the Women’s Month celebrations, honoring the significant contributions of women.
